Thanks for completing the poll last week on where you’re at with your skill level. Not sure if you can see the result in the email or via the app … in case you’re interested, I left the poll open for a week and the results were (drum roll) Beginner/Easy 39%, Intermediate 55%, and Experienced 6%. Most of my patterns are easy and quick makes although I do have some intermediate patterns on the blog. Upcoming patterns are pretty easy too so I hope you won’t be disappointed!
At the beginning of this week, I blogged about strategies and resources that will help those with dyslexia (and work for anyone overwhelmed with reading written crochet patterns). It’s something I’ve been meaning to write for a couple of years … I feel strongly that dyslexia and other learning differences shouldn’t be a barrier to joining in with the crochet world. You can find the post here. Feel free to share it with anyone you think might find it helpful. Are there any strategies you would add?
This week’s pattern release is the penultimate summer project from me (although I’m bursting with ideas for next year!).
Ruana Shawl Crochet Pattern
Despite its simplicity, my design is far from ordinary 😊 offering you multiple styling options to suit various occasions and your personal taste. My favourite way to wear it is belted as a cover up. We haven’t had a lot of sunshine over here (awful summer so far!) but when we have, it’s been easy to slip over a strappy top and shorts when I need to go out. It also looks great on lunch dates worn over the shoulder for a bit of class 😉
I used Scheepjes Scrumptious from my stash. Made from recycled plastic bottles (50%) and acrylic (50%) it’s really soft and feels great next to your skin.
For the next 48 hours you can download the PDF for free.

On the blog
This week I’ve written a self-care post about connecting with nature. There’s a free workbook to download that’s full of prompts to get you inspired. You can view the post here.
And at the tail end of last week, I shared my review on New Beginnings at the Cosy Cat Café. Julie Haworth won the Katie Fforde Debut Romantic Novel Award last year (loved that story too!). Her second book is set in Blossom Heath again – such a fab community. You can read my review here.
Next week
I have a roundup of free Tunisian crochet hat patterns to get you in the mood for your Autumn/Fall crocheting (publishing Wednesday). And on Friday I’ll be sharing my thoughts about The Story Collector by Iris Costello (pseudonym of bestselling author, Nuala Ellwood). On Monday I’ll be sharing a guest review about Five Days by Zoë Folbigg “A must-read uplifting romance for fans of When Harry Met Sally and One Day.”
Crochet Progress
The bolero pattern will be published on 7th August. The last summer pattern!
Sleeves are complete and I’m working the edging on the duster cardigan (it’s so squidgy and warm – perfect for the colder months!).
I have finished the baby blanket in candy pink but on the hunt for motifs I can sew on to one corner (any recommendations?).
I have finished the pocket scarf but am deciding whether to add a hood or not. This pattern will be published for a blog hop in September.
Crochet and Knit Designer Q&As: I have a few completed Q&As with the first one starting 6th September. Can’t wait for you to read these!
That’s it from me this week. Have a fab week ahead.
Shaz
Such a lovely, feminine shawl design! And I know many people will find the tips you have for reading crochet instructions with dyslexia super helpful, so I've shared both with my readers in my Thursday post.
